New York World Articles (March 21-May 9, 1920)

A series of eight autobiographical articles, supposedly written by Carpentier himself (highly unlikely, given that fact that his English was almost certainly not up to such a task), appeared throughout the spring of 1920 in the New York World and, in syndication, throughout the country. The articles were clearly intended as the first, and certainly most thorough, in an ongoing series of publicity gestures designed by promoter Tex Rickard to introduce Carpentier to the mainstream American public and to garner sympathy for him in his challenge for Jack Dempsey’s heavyweight crown. For an in-depth examination of the articles, see “Carpentier Tells All: An Autobiography in Eight Installments.” (found on this site under Carpentier vs. Dempsey: The Battle of the Century/The Hype).
