Nicolas Bergère: Joies et déconvenues d’un jeune boxeur by Tristan Bernard (1911)

Playwright and novelist Tristan Bernard (1866-1947), who became one of Carpentier’s most ardent fans as well as a close personal friend (close enough to serve as his best man at his 1920 wedding). In 1911, the year Carpentier won his first European championship, Bernard published a boxing novel, Nicolas Bergère: Joies et déconvenues d’un jeune boxeur (1911), the plot of which has few parallels to Carpentier’s life but whose protagonist may have been loosely inspired by the young champion.

Bernard later published a non-fiction book about boxing, Autour du ring (tableau de la boxe) (1925), which included illustrations by André Dunoyer de Segonzac, some of which are clearly depictions of Carpentier.
